The Misconception Of Me, The third album, Chapter 2

About it

The Misconception Of Me is SHINee’s third studio album released April 26 2013. The full album “The Misconception Of Us” was released in two parts being “The Misconception Of You” and “The Misconception Of Me,”it is a trilogy! Previous to this release, their music has always been extremely diverse but this album truly lets them shine in many different genres like Electro and Rock. This release has a way darker tone which feels very eerie. I wanted to talk about this album specifically because it is my personal favorite in their entire discography.

Why do I love it so much

In all honesty, every comeback they’ve had in the past seventeen years has always been creatively driven by their raw passion for true lyricism and making music, and I feel as though that passion really shines in this album. Having songs raging from sweet ballads to full dark pop-rock is actually insane to me, and yet every song feels so cohesive when listening to the album in order. Looking at the promo video, Jonghyun, one of the members says, “As for the music video — it’s quite new. Very different from our past ones. Even right now, during this interview, you can see the colors and concepts are unique, almost like Inception,” and honestly it couldn’t have been worded better!

The aesthetics

The outfits chosen for this era can be described with one word: funky. They incorporated a bunch of bright colors, and outfits like suits that were obviously very altered to fit the musical style of the album.

Poet | Artist

Their newest release

Shinee recently made a comeback with their single titled Poet | Artist on May 25th of this year, which fun fact, he actually wrote and recorded the demo for. The titletrack shares the same name with Jonghun’s full album Poet | Artist. That album is the last piece that was released under his name, which was 2018.

BTS of recording

As a longtime fan watching the behind the scenes recording for the song, it felt really bittersweet hearing Jonghyun’s voice so clearly like that, Especially in new content too. I know all Shawols felt the same way watching this, but seeing the members recording the song, staying so strong and even joking around truly shows how much they’ve heeled, which is really comforting to see. There are many instances of the members joking about how difficult the song is to sing, especially Key when he says “ He wrote this song suiting it just to him.” They also all mention the fact that it is extremely high pitched for them which I found hilarious!! In all honesty though the best part of the video is watching the members fully immerse themselves while recording the song and emulating certain enunciations that Jonghyun would do which I thought was so cute and amazing, it is truly keeping his spirit alive. Taemin even made fun of it and it really felt like the younger brother still teasing his hyung after so long!

The physical album

As one does, I obviously purchased the album right when it came out and I only have good things to say about it! It was a little pricey but living in Canada and all I should expect that honestly especially with shipping price included. I bought the photo book version of the album but there are five plushies available for each member that you can buy and they are just the cutest things ever! At the moment I don’t have any of them but hopefully I’ll get all of them when I have more money haha !! The photoshoot is meant to resemble his poet artist one and she is, and it does show a lot actually.

Lee Taemin-The idol of idols

Who is he

It feels only right to finish this off with talking about my favorite member. If you know anything about K-pop, you would know about what a bias and bias wrecker are. If you don’t, it is essentially just who your favorite member is and which member could take that position too. My bias in Shinee and my favorite soloist of all time probably, is Lee Taemin of course.

Career as a solo artist

His artistry is truly unmatched in my opinion. Having releases such as Move, Want, Criminal and Guilty, it’s safe to say that he will keep his position as the idol of idols! Now don’t get me wrong, each of the members in the group all have their own solo discographies which are so amazing and truly represent them as artists but Taemins is just on another level, his voice being so smooth and elegant gives off this certain vibe that none of the other members have and I just love it so much. Interestingly enough, he was the first out of the group to debut as a solo artist with “Danger” as the leading title track and I couldn’t imagine a better song for him. The song truly fits its era that it came out too which was 2014.

Guilty era

If you were to ask me what my favorite era of his was I wouldn’t be able to answer cuz I literally love all of them so much but if I did have to pick just one it would be “Guilty”. Guilty being the title track and the name of the EP Is his fourth mini album and was released on October 30th 2023. The main themes present during this era is loss of innocence and religious guilt which is a general theme within his music. The song mostly talks about how he didn’t really get to enjoy his childhood to the fullest due to debuting at such a young age-14. Now as an adult he is reclaiming that lost time. This comeback definitely does feel a little more personal and intimate since it’s the first one after he was dismissed from the military.
